La Comuna Cajey is a community-based organization whose mission is committed to social and economic justice for families living in Barrio Las Vegas and other communities in the Cayey region. It promotes the education, defense and conservation of the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico, as well as the environmental, historical and natural attributes that distinguish the environment of the Las Vegas neighborhood of Cayey. With the development of the Cajey Solidarity Company, the Cajey Commune aspires to create a source of own funds that allows them to financially support their community action and service initiatives through the production and sale of products representative of the gastronomic heritage of Puerto Rico .

Our history

Our story began in 2016 when a community group came together to rescue and rehabilitate the abandoned and disused structure of the oldest primary school in our neighborhood formerly known as Alejandro Tapia. You can see how we received the structure that with great courage, effort, faith and with great purpose we have built. From the beginning, the Vision is clear. To date, we have managed to carry out an innovative project to empower ourselves and develop community initiatives of great potential and scope.

The Cajey Commune was born from the need, commitment and improvement to create a space that offers conditions of equality and opportunities for the human, social and economic development of the community and its people. We develop strategies to understand the needs of the neighborhood and its inhabitants; where we create a sustainable, resilient space that provides help and hope to people; with the love, empathy and solidarity that distinguishes us, following the best and most authentic cultural tradition of a people.

At the Cajey Solidarity Company, we aspire to financial sustainability through the preparation and sale of traditional Puerto Rican products, offering tasting experiences of ancestral foods and an offer of various traditional Puerto Rican cooking workshops.

With the income generated by the social enterprise La Comuna Cajey, it is proposed to support the following initiatives:

  1. Counteract food insecurity in the community of Las Vegas, Cayey.
  2. Create fair and constructive employment opportunities for youth in the community.
  3. Stimulate the development and strengthening of small farmers.
  4. Promote education about the conservation and protection of natural environments in our special communities.

     When you purchase our products, you will be directly supporting our programs and services, ensuring that “ El Fogón de Cajey is always on” and we can continue sharing food to those who need it most in our community.

Our vision

Our vision is to transform the community through a model of food and financial sustainability and a sustainable lifestyle ideal for the present and the future. This is achieved in an eco-environmental and cultural environment, where our values, education and the development of human capabilities stand out. Our key sectors include gastronomic manufacturing, community service, tourism and agriculture, highlighting our traditions from a perspective aligned with our ethical, moral and human values.

Train and educate residents and future generations through the development of projects aimed at creating a conscious, resilient community committed to the search for the common good, a sustainable, healthy life in harmony with our natural environment. We strive to serve as an example and share our experiences to help other communities in our archipelago achieve a better quality of life.
